Nearly 30 Children Learn Confidence, Bike Safety and Tools to Stay Fit through Rodgers Health and BikeWalkKC Partnership

Kansas City, MO— Rodgers Health and BikeWalkKC brought a new program to nearly 30 children at Kansas City Housing Authority Developments. The children are learning confidence, traffic safety skills and the tools to stay fit through the program and partnership.

The program is a combination of BikeWalkKC’s popular Bicycle Lesson and Safety Training (BLAST) curriculum and components of their Earn-A-Bike curriculum. The program is split into six sessions that focus on expanding their bicycle maintenance knowledge while practicing bike handling skills guided by BikeWalkKC’s instructors. Participants with good program attendance and behavior receive a bicycle, helmet and lock with successful completion of the program.

“Bicycling is an efficient, safe and fun way to get around as transportation to school, work, or other activities AND be physically active. Not to mention it connects you to your neighborhood. At BikeWalkKC, we are committed to helping youth and adults gain the confidence and skills they need to be safe bicyclists,” said Maggie Priesmeyer, Education Programs Manager for BikeWalkKC. “We strive to break down the barrier of access to bikes, by providing them to class participants. We look forward to expanding our programs for youth and adults at Samuel Rodgers Health Center,” Maggie added.

A health assessment was added to the program, the participants’ BMI, blood pressure, respiration and pulse were measured at the beginning of the program and will be measured again as the program comes to an end. Rodgers Health and BikeWalkKC hope the health assessments show the positive impact the program has on fitness levels and overall health.

The final sessions are scheduled on August 3 from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. at Chouteau Courts and 1:30-3:00 p.m. at Riverview Gardens where kids will complete their final course and receive their bikes.
