Meet Dr. Cruz
Jose Cruz, Pediatrician, loves being part of the Rodgers Health family. Get to know Dr. Cruz.
What Dr. Cruz loves about Rodgers Health: The people, hands down. “Working at Rodgers Health is an opportunity to not only practice your profession, but also make a difference in the lives of people. Some of these patients have just come to the country, are just starting off; others need help with their basic health care. I love being able to extend our assistance,” says Dr. Cruz.
Day in the life as Dr. Cruz: “I am a pediatrician, so each day I have the opportunity and the fortune to work with younger patients. I take care of newborns up to adolescents and everyone in between,” he says. Much of his work is in preventative care. “To keep society healthy is to start good preventative medicine while children are young,” Dr. Cruz explains. Also part of his role is helping with acute illnesses, from coughs and colds to flus and infections.
Before Rodgers Health: Dr. Cruz grew up in the Philippines, and that’s also where he studied. “The Philippines is where my roots are, and that’s also where I went to medical school. I was fortunate to have the premier educational opportunity for a medical career,” he says. “I started to realize that the medical profession is less a vocation and more of a mission — to impart not only your knowledge but also your compassion.” That heart is what drives him today. He was first an opthamologist, and then pursued more education to become a pediatrician.
What brought him to Rodgers Health: After training in New York, he seized the first opportunity that matched his mission, at a health center in Texas. His wife’s career brought him to Kansas City, where he became a Rodgers Health pediatrician. “Working for Rodgers Health is the best decision I have made in my career, absolutely. My goal as a pediatrician is in line with the mission and the purpose here. It was a good fit and so I happily accepted the position. It has worked out very well ever since.”
Family: Dr. Cruz and his wife have called KC home for the past five years, having moved here for their work. Most of his family is still in the Philippines, where he is from originally, but he’s found a similar heart for family at Rodgers Health. “I value family very much and I’m glad my Rodgers Health colleagues value family too.”
Outside Rodgers Health: Dr. Cruz likes to keep active, especially jogging and swimming. He and his wife also like the Kansas City arts scene — the Symphony and Nelson Atkins Art Museum are their favorites.
He’s going to Disney World: Maybe it’s because he’s a pediatrician, but when it comes to Disney, Dr. Cruz is a kid at heart. “I still enjoy Disney World if I have a chance!” he smiles. Universal Studios and Harry Potter World are favorites too.
Favorite thing about Kansas City: “I love having four seasons here,” he says. “I grew up in the tropical climate, so I’ve had my fair share of hot weather and I appreciate it when the weather changes seasons.” Plus, he loves the people. “People in Kansas City are warm, friendly people, and many lean towards family, which I think is very good.”
Best-kept KC secret: Maybe it’s not too much of a secret, Dr. Cruz admits. “But KC barbecue stands out. Texas barbecue tries to compete, but KC barbecue is wonderful.”
Best part of his job at Rodgers Health: “I love coming to work everyday and feeling that I’m part of a family,” he says. “Dr. Rodgers had this vision of providing healthcare to those who need access. Everyone here has the same intention: we all want to put a smile on a patient’s face, and we all come here every day not only to help them, but to make a difference in their life.”
